New York City Public Schools make up the largest public school system in the United States — hundreds of thousands of students across the five boroughs, in well over a thousand schools. If you are a student or parent navigating it, here is how the Regents fit in and what makes the city distinctive.

A system like no other

NYC's district spans Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. With more than a thousand schools and an enormous range of programs, students have far more school choice than in most places — and a high-school admissions process to match. Unlike most U.S. districts, New York's "Big Five" city districts (NYC among them) are fiscally dependent: their budgets are part of the city's budget.

The Regents are the same statewide

Wherever you are in New York, the Regents exams are identical — the same statewide tests, scored on the same scale, with 65 to pass and 85 for "mastery." NYC offers the standard June, August, and January administrations. Course pacing can differ by school, but the exam, and the diploma it counts toward, is a statewide standard.

Specialized high schools & the SHSAT

NYC is known for its specialized high schools — schools like Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Technical. Eight of them admit students through a single test, the SHSAT, while Fiorello H. LaGuardia admits by audition. These admissions tests are separate from the Regents, but students at every NYC high school still take Regents exams to graduate.

One of the most multilingual student bodies anywhere

NYC students collectively speak hundreds of home languages, and the city provides translated materials and support for English Language Learners. If English is not your first language, you are far from alone — and reviewing concepts in the language you think in can help while you build up test-day English.

Preparing smart in a big system

  • Diagnose early. Take a full practice exam to find your weakest NYS topics, then focus your time there.
  • Use the calendar. Three administrations a year let you plan a retake if needed — but aim to pass the first time.
  • Review every miss. Understanding why an answer is right is what actually moves your score.
